Jewels of the Versilia Riviera: Villa Borbone

The many attractions to be found in and around the town of Viareggio certainly include the historic residence of the Villa Borbone, which stands at the heart of an extensive farm estate in the renowned Regional Park of Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli. The Villa attracts historians, artists and lovers of culture and beauty.

Visitors can appreciate the majesty of the building right from the entrance to the garden, where an avenue through woodland leads past flower beds to the doors of the building.

The Villa is surrounded by gardens embellished with fountains and luxuriant, well-kept vegetation. A “sound garden” has been recreated in the front courtyard, where the music played over a speaker system heightens the appeal and romance of the setting.

The coat of arms, in Carrara marble, of the Bourbon family can be seen on the façade above the central balcony window. Carrara marble, one the area’s most renowned products, has also been used to frame all the windows of the façade.

The north wing of the building houses a stable block and the neo-14th century style chapel, dedicated to San Carlo Borromeo, which is also the Bourbon-Parma family mausoleum and contains the tombs of the sovereigns of Lucca and their descendants.

Villa Borbone cappella

Commissioned by Maria Luisa di Borbone, Duchess of Lucca, as a hunting lodge, the construction of the villa to plans by the Viareggio architect Lorenzo Nottolini dates back to 1822. It was later used as a holiday home and, maintaining its historical appeal, has been renovated a number of times over the decades.

In 1844, seventeen farmhouses were built to house the estate’s farmers.

Subsequently, ownership of the villa passed to the Duchess’s son, Charles Louis, Duke of Lucca, who abdicated in favour of his son Charles III, who thus became the legitimate owner of Villa Borbone and he commissioned the architect Giuseppe Gheri to build the mausoleum chapel.

Infanta Blanca of Spain, the wife of Leopold Salvator of Habsburg Lorraine, Archduke of Austria and granddaughter of Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany, later inherited the estate.

During the First World War, the villa was deemed to be enemy property and was therefore requisitioned for use by the Italian navy as a command post for an experimental artillery-range.

In 1985, the owners sold the villa to the engineer, Benvenuto Barsanti, who then donated it to the People of Viareggio, entrusting its safekeeping to the Municipality.

Today the villa is used for exhibitions, events, and book presentations and offers guided tours by prior appointment.
