Five things to do in Viareggio and the surrounding area

Are you thinking about a break but don’t know where to go? A holiday by the sea in Viareggio might fit the bill!

What’s not to love about Viareggio? Set against an alpine backdrop on the coast of Tuscany, in Viareggio you can relax and breathe in the sea breeze as it ruffles your hair and fills your heart with memorable experiences and landscapes that will be difficult to forget when you return home.

The Versilia Riviera has much more to offer than we can highlight here and to help you see that that there can be no better destination, here are just 5 of the many things you can do in and around Viareggio:

One of the most delightful places in the area is the Viareggio Promenade, which extends for more than 2 kilometres from the Burlamacca canal to the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte and which is studded with Art Nouveau buildings, renowned restaurants and cafes and shops and boutiques of all kinds.

Whether you decide to explore it on foot or by bicycle along the cycle path, the experience, suitable for all ages and tastes, will be unforgettable.  A stroll or bike ride a stone’s throw from the beach is certainly one of the many things you can do in Viareggio in the summer.

Shopping lovers will enjoy the many boutiques offering the best local and European brands and, between one purchase and the next, will perhaps succumb to the temptation of an artisan ice cream or a cocktail as the sun goes down.

The Viareggio Promenade is frequented by holidaymakers and locals alike and is the ideal venue for a leisurely stroll past buildings of great historical and artistic value and others whose architecture is more modern.

No description of Viareggio is complete without mentioning the annual event of world-renown, the Carnival!

Over 5 weekends, approximately between the months of January and March, the town comes alive and everyday cares melt away in the cordial, melodious and happy atmosphere that reigns in the town and which draws thousands of visitors of all ages and from all over the world, who flock to the parades of the spectacular, colossal, allegorical floats.  Things to see in Viareggio during the Carnival season

At the Carnival Museum you can learn about the 150-year history of the Viareggio Carnival through a selection of images that document the event’s artistic evolution over the decades. Models illustrate the sites around the town where the Carnival originated and grew, thanks to the dedication of local artists and the enthusiasm of the townsfolk, in a timeline beginning in 1873 and continuing to 2001, when the Carnival Citadel was inaugurated and which has become the trademark of the creativity, culture and history of this event.

This unrivalled Carnival is one of the spectacles you must see at least once in your life; what are you waiting for?

Two of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany are within very easy reach of Viareggio: Pisa and Lucca.

Nobody should go home after a holiday in Tuscany without posing for a photo with one of the most famous monuments in the world: the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The Piazza del Duomo is just one of the many attractions to be found in Pisa, one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art.

Buildings, monuments and museums testify to the era when the Maritime Republic of Pisa dominated the Mediterranean. Moreover, thanks to its excellent university, Pisa is a young and dynamic city.

Lucca is known for its imposing city walls, which protect a jewel of inestimable value. “The City of 100 Churches” has countless streets and alleys lined with local craft shops, restaurants, where you can enjoy the traditional flavours of the local cuisine, and monuments and buildings of unparalleled beauty … and all this in an atmosphere where time seems to have stopped in the Middle Ages.

Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso are not villages but little gems, corners of paradise right by the sea.

A visit to each offers the scenic beauty of crystal clear coastal waters, vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see across the landscape, tiny inlets and pastel-coloured houses flanked by trails offering views of everyday life and unforgettable vistas.

Viareggio isn’t far from the wonderful destination of the Cinque Terre, the perfect day out for everyone.

Numerous activities are available, from long walks overlooking the sea to boat tours, not to mention the excellent local cuisine based on fresh fish…. and you cannot leave before you try a dish of pasta with pesto!

This fairy-tale world in Liguria is within easy reach from Viareggio by car or train.

The Versilia Riviera has great, but little known, historical, artistic and environmental heritage.

There are many historical houses to visit in Viareggio, such as the Villa Borbone, which is a splendid noble residence located midway along the tree-lined avenue, Viale dei Tigli, leading from Viareggio to Torre del Lago.

Surrounded by extensive parkland, Villa Borbone is a typical country residence and was used as a holiday home. Today it is the venue for cultural and artistic events and is also the site of the visitors’ centre for the Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli Nature Reserve.

Of equal note, and especially recommended for history buffs, is the Villa Paolina, which is situated very close to the promenade and the beach establishments and owes its name to Paolina Bonaparte, Napoleon’s sister, who chose this as her home in the latter part of her life.

Today it houses the Blanc Museum of Viareggio and the “Giovanni Ciuffreda” Museum of musical instruments.
