Discovering the Versilia Riviera
There are a number of small towns and other attractions within easy reach of the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte that are definitely worth visiting. Here are some suggestions for those looking for a different day out, exploring the surrounding area:
Marble quarries in the Apuan Alps
Strada Comunale per Colonnata, 1, 54033 Colonnata MS
If you’re fond of long walks and don’t mind a little physical exertion, the magnificent Apuan Alps that border the Versilia Riviera are highly recommended.
The marble quarries, a spectacular destination just an hour’s drive from the Hotel, offer a close-up view of how marble, which is very much part of the local tradition and economy, is quarried and several tours are available to discover the area and the techniques used to extract this world-renowned marble.
The secrets of generations of local craftsmen make the finished products even more sought-after.
The Big Bench – Pietrasanta
Via della Rocca, 26, 55045 Pietrasanta LU
Pietrasanta is the Versilia Riviera’s city of art. It is also known as “little Athens” because countless artists, sculptors and painters have made the city their home. Pietrasanta is only 18 minutes from the hotel and can also be reached along the Versilia coast road. Wonderful views are guaranteed! The delightful city centre is the setting for numerous sculptures, which are changed periodically throughout the year and which are chiefly exhibited in the main square, Piazza Duomo, where it is possible to have a coffee or, why not, a glass of wine, whilst admiring the beauty of these artistic creations a few meters away.
An unusual attraction is the Pietrasanta Big Bench. This out-of-scale piece of outdoor furniture creates an amusing optical effect whereby visitors sitting on the bench appear very small. Thanks to its position, the Big Bench is also the ideal spot to enjoy nature, a spectacular sea view (perhaps at sunset) and a wonderful view of the city of Pietrasanta. The bench was built with materials that ensure it can withstand the elements. Big Bench visitors frequently share their photos on social media.
A rare architectural gem, Villa Argentina – Viareggio
Via Amerigo Vespucci, 44, 55049 Viareggio LU
We conclude with the town of Viareggio, where the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte is located. Known for its Italian Art Nouveau “Liberty” style architecture, Viareggio is also called “the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea” because of the wealth of artistic, cultural and recreational pastimes available.
One of the most historic and renowned buildings in the town is the beautiful Villa Argentina, which was built around 1900 and takes its name from the Argentine origins of the first owner, Francesca Racca Oytana. The marked Art Nouveau style that distinguishes the building is also expressed in the characteristic ceramic decorations with soft and delicate colours.
Now open to the public, the Villa hosts events, weddings and art exhibitions and can be visited during opening times, most mornings (9.30 – 13.30), depending on the time of year.
