Bike Tours around the Versilia Riviera: Monte Folgorito

A challenging, spectacular tour with numerous ups and downs ready to put riders to the test.

Distance: 45km
Altitude difference: 850m
Route: asphalt – dirt track – mule track – footpath
Degree of difficulty: demanding
Duration: 5-6 hours

  • good level of fitness is essential
  • technical skills are required for the descent, which is challenging at times; in the last, rather bumpy stretch, it is necessary to shoulder the bicycle.
  • The itinerary can be completed on an e-MTB, but bear in mind that it will have to be carried for the final section.

The tour begins on the uphill Castello Aghinolfi slope followed by a descent to Montignoso and then an ascent on asphalt to Pasquilio.

After this, the dirt track crosses the old Carchio quarries and arrives at the foot of Monte Folgorito, from where the view spans the coast from Livorno to the Golfo dei Poeti in Liguria and across the sea to the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica.

Dismounting and leaving bicycles for a short walk, a footpath leads to the cross on the summit of Monte Folgorito.

Two possible routes return downhill: a simple road alternating asphalt and dirt or the fun dirt track leading to Cerreta S. Nicola, a mountain pasture with a church dedicated to San Nicola da Tolentino.

A 3 km single-track leads from the church to Monte di Ripa.

At 1100 meters lies the Macchietta quarry and, higher up, the historic Tacca Bianca quarry.

The descent is along the same quarry road, without guard rail and overhanging the mountainside, and great care should be taken.

The itinerary continues to the Romanesque church of San Martino, where Michelangelo worked and where it is thought that he sculpted the rose window that adorns the chapel, and down to the historic Bardiglio Cappella quarries and through the village of Fabiano.
